Behind Every Great Man is a Great Woman: Jesus-Mary Relationship

Updated: Sep 7, 2021

"Behind every great man is a great woman"

This phrase is very common to athletes, artists, authors and many more. Some of them refer “woman” to their wife, best friend, sister or mother. This time, allow me to share my reflection and how I can see the mother-son relation of Jesus and Mary in this phrase.

JESUS - MARY RELATIONSHIP

Some people would say that every time Jesus and Mary are mentioned together in the bible, its either Jesus rejects her or dishonors her. In the second chapter of the gospel of John, Jesus’ first miracle, instead of calling her “mother”, He used “woman”, and presuming it is disrespectful. In the gospel of Matthew chapter 12, while Jesus was preaching, the people told him that his mother and brothers are outside and then Jesus said, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers? Whoever does what my Father in heaven wants is my brother, my sister, and my mother.”, some would say that when Jesus spoke these words, Jesus didn’t acknowledge His own mother. Like what? Really? If we really understand what Jesus said, the very person in His life who does what his Father wants is Mary herself.

Her fiat in the annunciation is an act of following the will of the father and made her the first Christian, a true follower, and disciple of Jesus.

When Mary obeyed the will of the Father to become the mother of the Messiah, she did her best as a mother and obviously, she excelled in doing that. She took care of Him well before He was laid in the manger until the moment He was laid in the tomb. With Joseph her chaste husband, they fled to Egypt and walked miles to protect the child from Herod. After the Passover, when they noticed that the boy Jesus was missing, they went back to Jerusalem and kept looking for Him. She stayed with Jesus while He was in pain carrying the cross until His death. Well, that’s exactly what moms do, right?

Mary didn’t leave Jesus. Exactly what a mother would do.

I could imagine how a mother is leaping for joy when she saw his son performing on a stage or by the time when her son graduates. How a mother would do when his son is ill, she would not leave the house or even the side of the bed just to take care of her son. Things that Mary would do for Jesus.

Mary has a very big part of Christ’s salvific mission. It was her "yes" that gave us the opportunity to see the invisible God. It was her yes that brought Jesus into our lives. With the Holy Spirit, Mary’s care molded Christ’s humanity.

Mary brought Jesus to us and she will always bring us closer to Him.
